Turkey Scoring (NWTF Method)
Weight + 2 points per inch of beard + 10 points per inch of spur, per the published NWTF scoring system.
How this works
The National Wild Turkey Federation's scoring system is a straightforward weighted sum: raw body weight counts fully, each inch of beard length is worth 2 points, and each inch of spur length is worth a hefty 10 points — reflecting how much rarer exceptionally long spurs are compared to weight or beard length alone.
Why spurs are weighted so heavily
Spur length tends to plateau earlier in a turkey's life than beard length does, and truly long spurs (over 1.5 inches) are uncommon even on mature birds, which is part of why the NWTF formula rewards them so much more per inch. A multi-bearded bird adds every beard's length together before applying the multiplier, so it can score well even with average-length individual beards.
Frequently asked questions
Why are spurs worth so much more per inch than beard length?
Spur length tends to plateau earlier in a turkey's life than beard length does, and truly long spurs (over about 1.5 inches) are genuinely rare even on mature birds — the NWTF formula's heavier per-inch weighting reflects that relative rarity.
How does a multi-bearded turkey score compared to a single-beard bird?
All beard lengths are added together before the ×2 multiplier is applied, so a multi-bearded bird can score very well even if no single beard is exceptionally long, since the total length still counts.
Does turkey weight matter as much as beard and spur length?
Weight counts at a straight 1-to-1 rate (no multiplier), while beard and spur length are multiplied up — so on a points basis, spur and beard length usually contribute more to a high score than weight alone.
