Scope / Binocular Exit Pupil, FOV & Twilight Factor
Optical numbers that affect how bright and wide your view is.
How this works
Exit pupil is simply the diameter of the beam of light leaving the eyepiece — a bigger number means a brighter image, up to the point where it exceeds your own eye's pupil size, which even at its most dilated in the dark is usually only around 5-7mm depending on age. Twilight factor is an older, related index that rewards both magnification and objective size, historically used to compare binoculars for low-light performance.
Field of view trade-off
Field of view at range simply scales your scope's rated FOV (usually published at 100 yards) linearly with distance — twice the range means half the field of view. Higher magnification generally narrows field of view, which is part of why low-power scopes are often preferred for fast shots at closer range in thick cover.
Frequently asked questions
What exit pupil size is best for hunting at dawn or dusk?
Many low-light hunters look for at least 4–5mm of exit pupil, which comes closer to filling a dilated human eye in dim conditions than a smaller exit pupil would.
Why doesn't a bigger exit pupil always mean a brighter view?
Once the exit pupil exceeds what your eye's own pupil can actually use in that light level, the extra size stops adding usable brightness — your eye becomes the limiting factor, not the optic.
Does higher magnification always mean a smaller exit pupil?
For a given objective lens size, yes — exit pupil is objective diameter divided by magnification, so cranking up magnification without a larger objective shrinks the exit pupil and dims the image.
