Boone & Crockett Scoring — Elk & Other Antlered Game
The same official beam/point/circumference/spread scoring pattern used for whitetail also applies to elk and similar antlered big game. Horned game (sheep, pronghorn) uses a different official formula and isn't covered here yet.
How this works
Elk, along with other similarly antlered big game, are scored under the same official Boone & Crockett method as whitetail: total beam length, every point, circumference measurements at four points on each antler, and inside spread, with deductions for asymmetry between the left and right sides.
What's not covered here yet
Horned game — sheep, pronghorn, and similar species that grow permanent horns rather than shed antlers — uses a genuinely different official scoring formula (based on horn length and base/mass circumferences rather than points and symmetry) and isn't covered by this calculator. Only antlered big game following the standard beam-and-point pattern applies here.
Frequently asked questions
Does this work for sheep or pronghorn?
No — horned game like sheep and pronghorn uses a genuinely different official scoring formula based on horn length and mass circumferences rather than points and symmetry. This calculator covers antlered game following the standard beam-and-point pattern (elk and similar species).
How much bigger are elk measurements than whitetail?
Roughly double in most dimensions — elk main beams and circumferences typically run about twice a comparable whitetail's measurements, though the scoring method itself is identical.
Does elk scoring deduct for asymmetry the same way as whitetail?
Yes — it follows the same official Boone & Crockett pattern, deducting for any difference between matching left and right measurements just like the whitetail method.
