Time of Flight & Moving-Game Lead
How long the bullet is in the air, and how far a moving target travels meanwhile.
How this works
Time of flight comes straight out of the same trajectory model used for the Bullet Drop calculator — it's simply how long the bullet takes to reach your target range. The 1.4667 constant converts miles per hour into feet per second, so multiplying by time of flight gives the distance the target itself covers while the bullet is in the air.
Using this on moving game
This is a planning number, not a field tool — nobody's calculating lead in real time on a moving animal. It's most useful for understanding, in advance, how much a walking or trotting animal at a given range might move between your trigger pull and bullet arrival, so you know roughly what to expect rather than being surprised by it.
Frequently asked questions
Why does a slow animal at long range sometimes need more lead than a fast one up close?
Lead depends on target speed multiplied by time of flight, and time of flight grows quickly with range — so a long shot at a slow-moving animal can require more lead than a short shot at a faster one.
Is this meant to be used in the field in real time?
No — it's a planning tool to understand roughly how much a moving target could shift between your shot and bullet arrival at a given range, not something to calculate mid-shot.
Does wind affect time of flight too?
Not directly in this calculator — time of flight here comes from the bullet's own deceleration through air, independent of any crosswind. Wind drift is a separate effect calculated elsewhere.
