Muzzleloader Powder: Volume, Shots per Pound & Cost
Convert a volume charge to weight, and work out shots per pound and cost per shot. Not a substitute for your powder's own charge instructions.
How this works
This is a straightforward unit conversion (7,000 grains to a pound) applied to your charge weight, then scaled to however large your powder container is, to find how many shots you get and what each one costs including the bullet, sabot, and primer.
Volume vs. weight charges
Traditional muzzleloaders are often loaded by volume using a powder measure, while modern in-lines and load data are frequently specified by weight. The two aren't always equivalent because black powder, Pyrodex, and various modern substitutes pack to different densities — always follow your specific powder's own published charge instructions rather than assuming volume and weight charges match.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use volume and weight charges interchangeably?
No — different powders and substitutes pack to different densities, so a volume-measured charge and a weight-measured charge of the same "size" aren't always the same amount. Always follow your specific powder's own instructions.
How much does buying a bigger container actually save?
It depends on your local pricing, but buying a larger container almost always lowers the per-shot cost of the powder itself — run the numbers here with your actual container sizes to see the real difference.
Does this include the cost of the bullet and primer?
The base shots-per-pound and shots-per-container numbers are powder only; the final cost-per-shot figure adds in whatever extra per-shot cost (bullet, sabot, primer) you enter separately.
