Muzzleloader Ballistics
Drop and velocity for saboted or conical muzzleloader bullets, using common velocity/BC presets.
How this works
Muzzleloader projectiles run the same trajectory physics as any other bullet, but start from a much lower ballistic coefficient than a centerfire rifle bullet, especially patched round balls. That low BC means drag slows them dramatically faster, which shows up as a steeply curving trajectory past the zero range compared to a modern rifle cartridge.
Sabot, conical, or round ball
A saboted bullet (a smaller-caliber bullet riding in a plastic sleeve) generally carries the highest BC of the three, a solid conical bullet sits in the middle, and a patched round ball has the lowest BC and the shortest effective range of the three. Pick the BC preset that roughly matches your actual projectile type for a more realistic drop estimate.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my muzzleloader drop so much faster than a centerfire rifle past 150 yards?
Muzzleloader projectiles have a much lower ballistic coefficient than typical rifle bullets, so drag slows them dramatically faster — which is exactly why many muzzleloader hunters treat 150–200 yards as a practical outer limit.
Which BC should I use for my specific projectile?
Match the BC to your actual bullet type — saboted bullets typically run higher (roughly 0.18–0.22), conicals a bit lower (0.15–0.19), and patched round balls lowest of all (0.05–0.09), per the note on the input field.
Does this work for both 100-yard and 150-yard zeros?
Yes — the zero range is a selectable input, so you can compare drop at your target range for either common muzzleloader zero distance.
