Tag Draw Odds Estimator (Pilot)
A formula-based estimator using the three published draw methodologies (preference points, squared bonus points, and random draw). Plug in real numbers from your state's own harvest/draw report — this does not include live state data yet, and even state-run simulations can differ from this simplified model.
How this works
The three formulas here mirror the three main draw systems states actually use. A pure random draw (no points system) is the simplest: your odds are just tags divided by total applicants. A preference-point system (like Colorado's) guarantees tags go to the highest point-holders first, so this model works out how many tags are left for your exact point bracket after everyone with more points is served. A squared bonus-point system (used in various forms by Utah, Nevada, Montana, and Arizona) weights each applicant's chance by the square of their points plus one, which is why bonus points compound in value much faster than preference points do.
Why this is labeled a pilot
Real state draws layer in residency splits, quota allocations by unit, and pool sizes that shift year to year — details this simplified model doesn't have live data for yet. Plug in your own state's published applicant and tag numbers from their harvest report for the most realistic estimate this model can give, and treat the state's own published draw odds (when available) as the more authoritative number.
Frequently asked questions
How accurate is this compared to my state's actual published draw odds?
It's a simplified formula model of the three main public point-system methodologies, not fed by live state data — plug in real numbers from your own state's harvest report for the closest estimate, but treat the state's own published draw odds (when available) as the more authoritative number.
Which draw system does my state use?
Check your state wildlife agency's own materials — common patterns include preference points (guaranteed to the highest point-holders first, like Colorado), squared bonus points (weighted odds that compound with points, used in various forms by Utah, Nevada, Montana, and Arizona), and pure random draw with no points (like New Mexico or Idaho).
Why do bonus points help so much more than preference points as they build up?
In a squared bonus-point system, your odds weight scales with the square of your points plus one, so each additional point increases your odds by more than the last one did — which is why bonus points compound in value much faster than a simple preference-point system.
