Maximum Point-Blank Range
The farthest zero that keeps your bullet inside a chosen kill-zone radius, no holdover needed.
How this works
A bullet zeroed at, say, 250 yards actually rises above the line of sight in the middle of its flight before dropping back down and crossing the line of sight again at the zero range — then keeps falling below it further out. Maximum point-blank range finds the zero where the highest point of that rise and the eventual drop both stay inside your kill-zone radius, for the longest possible total distance.
Why this beats "just zero at 200"
The payoff is a single "aim dead-on" range you can trust out to a real number, without holding over or dialing turrets, for any shot inside that distance. It's a classic hunting-rifle setup approach, especially useful for guns you carry more than you shoot at known distances.
Frequently asked questions
What kill-zone radius should I use for deer?
A commonly cited estimate for a deer's vital zone is roughly 6–8 inches, though this varies by animal size and shot angle. Using a tighter radius (e.g. 3–4 inches) gives a more conservative, precision-focused result.
Does a bigger kill zone always mean a longer MPBR?
Yes, generally — a larger acceptable margin lets the bullet's path wander farther above and below the line of sight before you'd miss the zone, which pushes the maximum point-blank range farther out.
Do I still need to know my exact range if I'm inside MPBR?
No — that's the entire point of setting up a maximum point-blank range zero. Inside that distance you can hold dead-on without ranging the animal or adjusting your aim point, which is why it's popular for fast-moving hunting situations.
