Cost per Shot / Cost per Hunt
What each trigger pull — or each hunt — actually costs.
How this works
This is straightforward arithmetic, but it's worth doing on purpose: dividing a box price by its round count gives the true marginal cost of a single trigger pull, and adding that to your license, tag, fuel, and lodging costs gives an honest total for the trip.
Why this framing helps
Hunters often think about ammo cost in isolation (expensive premium hunting ammo "feels" costly per box) while ignoring that a hunt's overhead usually makes the ammo a rounding error in the total. Seeing both numbers side by side makes it easier to judge whether spending more on a better bullet is actually a meaningful cost increase for the hunt as a whole.
Frequently asked questions
Why does overhead usually dominate the total more than ammo cost?
License, tags, gas, and lodging are typically fixed costs that don't scale with how many rounds you fire, while most hunters only fire a handful of shots per trip — so overhead ends up being the larger share of the honest total.
Should I count practice ammo in this too?
This calculator is built around a specific hunt's shots fired, but you can run it again with your practice round count and range-trip costs to see the total cost of getting proficient, separate from the hunt itself.
Does premium ammunition really change the total that much?
Usually not as much as it feels like — since most hunts only involve a few shots, even a notably more expensive box of premium ammunition is often a small fraction of the trip's total cost once license, tags, and travel are counted.
