Reloading Cost per Round & Break-Even
What handloading actually costs versus factory ammo, and how many rounds until your equipment pays for itself.
How this works
This adds up the real recurring cost of each handloaded round — bullet, powder, primer, and a small amortized cost for cases that get reused many times — and compares it against a comparable factory round's price. The savings per round, divided into your one-time equipment cost, tells you how many rounds you need to load before the equipment has paid for itself.
What this doesn't count
This is a pure cost comparison — it doesn't put a value on your own time at the bench, and it doesn't account for the accuracy or consistency gains many reloaders get from tuning a load specifically for their rifle, which factory ammo can't match. Some reloaders find the cost savings modest but keep reloading anyway for the precision and customization it allows.
Frequently asked questions
How many rounds until reloading equipment pays for itself?
It depends heavily on your shooting volume and the price gap versus factory ammo — this calculator divides your one-time equipment cost by the per-round savings to give that break-even number for your specific inputs.
Does this account for the value of my own time at the bench?
No — this is a pure cost comparison and doesn't put a dollar value on your time. Some reloaders find the cost savings modest but keep reloading anyway for the accuracy and customization it allows.
What if factory ammo is actually cheaper than my handload?
The calculator will show a negative savings per round and report "never at this price gap" for break-even — worth knowing before investing further in reloading for that specific cartridge.
