Density Altitude Calculator
The altitude your rifle (or engine) effectively "feels," from elevation, temperature, and pressure.
How this works
Density altitude = pressure altitude + 120 × (actual temp °F − ISA standard temp °F)
Density altitude answers one question: how thin is the air actually behaving, compared to a standard reference atmosphere? It first corrects your elevation for whatever the barometric pressure is doing that day (pressure altitude), then corrects again for how far the temperature is from the standard-atmosphere temperature at that pressure altitude.
Why hunters and pilots both use this
This is the same calculation aircraft pilots use for takeoff performance, borrowed by long-range shooters for the same reason: thinner air means less aerodynamic drag on a bullet in flight, which matters for precise trajectory work at distance. It's a smaller effect than wind or range estimation error at typical hunting distances, but it adds up on long-range shots.
Frequently asked questions
Why would I care about density altitude for hunting instead of just my actual elevation?
Air density — not raw elevation — is what actually affects bullet drag, and a hot, dry day can push density altitude thousands of feet above your real elevation, subtly changing your trajectory compared to a standard-atmosphere chart.
How big of an effect is this at typical hunting ranges?
It's usually a smaller factor than wind or range-estimation error inside 300 yards, but it becomes more meaningful for precise long-range work, especially at high elevation or in extreme heat.
Is this the same number pilots use?
Yes — it's the identical density altitude calculation used in aviation for aircraft performance, borrowed by long-range shooters for the same underlying reason: thinner air behaves differently than standard sea-level air.
